National Grant Awarded for Historic Steeple Restoration
Historic Capitol Hill Lutheran Church Receives National Grant for Crucial Repairs
DES MOINES, Iowa — Capitol Hill Lutheran Church has qualified for a$500,000 matching grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places (NFSP), a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Capitol Hill is one of just 30 sacred places selected nationwide this year from 466 applicants, with more than $9.1 million awarded across the cohort. The grant will support the restoration of the church’s historic steeple, a longtime landmark in Des Moines’ East Village.
For over 140 years, Capitol Hill Lutheran has been a place of worship, welcome, service, and community in the heart of Des Moines. Today, hundreds of people come through its doors each week for worship, education, community partnerships, and ministries serving neighbors throughout the city. “This grant is an extraordinary gift and affirmation - not only of the importance of preserving this historic building, but of the ministry that continues to happen here every day,” said the Rev. Minna Bothwell. “We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to help ensure that Capitol Hill can continue serving our neighbors and community for generations to come.”

At Capitol Hill, we carry a rich legacy of loving and serving our neighbors. Both of our predecessor congregations have faithfully welcomed refugees and immigrants from Vietnam, Latvia, Germany, Romania, and South Sudan.
That same spirit of welcome continues today through our mission ministries, as we seek to support our neighbords in the Des Moines community and ensure that all know they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.

Located in the lower levels of the church, the Clothes Closet is one of CHLC’s largest ministries, offering Clothing, Food, and Household Items with a welcoming, shopping-like experience free of charge with no ID required.
